TECHNICIAN firmly placed himself in the St Leger picture after he produced a battling display in winning the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
The colt by Mastercraftsman wore down a couragous Morando to win by 3/4 of a length, as he kept finding more in the straight to win going away from his rival, as he relished the step up in trip to 1m5 1/2f.
It was a third win from seven starts for the striking grey, who now is a major player in the final Classic of the season, the Group 1 St Leger at Doncaster on September 14.
Assistant trainer Freddie Meade said the pieces are now starting to fall together for the three-year-old.
"It's very difficult when you have a short amount of time to work these horses out and Technician has only had six runs, but a galloping track and a bit of juice have helped," said Meade.
The St Leger has been on our radar for a long time. he gets the trip and the way the ground will be in September would make it a logical step."
